LOCAL NIGERIAN NAMES FOR PLANTS AND HERBS

We have so many plants and herbs that are beneficial to us but we do not know the local names hence it’s difficult to get them in the market. I will be naming some of these herbs and plants and giving their local names too. If you know the names of other plants not mentioned here, you can indicate them in the comment section. I will very much love to hear from you.

BASIL PLANT: The basil plant we all know and have heard about is actually Nchanwu in igbo and Effirin in Yoruba.

NEEM: Neem is known as Dongoyaro.

TUMERIC: This is called Ile Pupa in Yoruba

HIBISCUS PLANT: This is what we generally refer to as zobo.

HENNA PLANT: Henna is Lali. It is used for body art especially in the northern part of Nigeria.

CHILLI PEPPER: This is the famous shombo

BLACK PEPPER:This is called uziza seed in igbo and Iyere in Yoruba and Shuwaka in Hausa.

CAYENNE PEPPER: This is known as ata ijosi in Yoruba

DANDELLION ROOT: This is called Yanrin in Yoruba.

MORINGA: This is known as Zogala in the Northern part of Nigeria.

CHIKWEED: This is Awede in Yoruba.

BITTERLEAF: Olugbu in Igbo and Ewuro in Yoruba.

DANDELLION ROOT: Efon- Yanrin in Yoruba.

CINNAMON:Igi pattai in Yoruba and Kirfat in Hausa.

FENUGREEK: Hulba in Hausa
